A fine antique Victorian walnut Davenport desk, crafted in richly figured walnut and displaying the classic form associated with this distinctive 19th-century writing desk design

Circa 1890

The sloping writing surface is inset with decorative leather and bordered with elegant ebonised stringing, providing a comfortable and practical area for writing or reading

Above the slope sits a raised stationery compartment with a hinged lid, offering useful storage for papers and writing accessories

Bought from a private house sale in London's Swiss Cottage

To one side is the traditional Davenport arrangement of four graduated drawers, each fitted with turned wooden knobs, while the opposite side is finished with a panelled cupboard door decorated with matching ebonised line inlay

The desk stands on shaped supports terminating in elegant scroll feet with concealed castors, allowing the piece to be moved easily when required
