Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece, serving as a focal point in traditional 19th-century reception rooms. Typically featuring substantial gilded wood or composition frames, these mirrors were crafted to reflect light from chandeliers and candles across large interiors.

19th-century gilt mirrors were constructed using timber cores overlaid with plaster or gesso, which was subsequently carved or moulded into decorative patterns. Gold leaf was then applied using water gilding or oil gilding techniques, creating a lustrous finish over hand-cut mercury or silvered glass.

Authentic 19th-century gilding displays subtle wear, revealing the reddish or grey clay base coat (bole) beneath the gold leaf in high-contact areas. Original mirror glass from this period often exhibits minor oxidisation spots, slight distortions, and dark grey backings, distinct from modern silvering.

A large gilt mirror can be placed above a contemporary fireplace or positioned above a minimalist sideboard to create contrast between historic detailing and modern architectural lines. Hanging or leaning the mirror opposite a window maximises natural light distribution across the room.

Dust giltwood frames gently using a soft, dry feather duster or camel-hair brush, avoiding wet cloths or commercial liquid cleaners that dissolve gesso and gold leaf. Clean the mirror glass carefully with a slightly dampened microfibre cloth, ensuring moisture does not touch the gilding or slip behind the frame edges.
