Description

An aneroid barometer and timepiece clock movement in an unusual ebonised oak case in the form of a Caduceus (the staff of Hermes or a herald), with two intertwined snakes wrapping around the dials signed Joseph Davis & Co on the barometer.

The aneroid Barometer with mercury thermometer has a blued steel indicator that covers the top half of the dial with the bottom used for the Fahrenheit and Centigrade scales of the thermometer.

The french timepiece clock has an eight day platform escapement movement with a brass bezel and white enamel dial.

Made in the late 19th Century circa 1890

A caduceus clock and barometer is an integrated wall-mounted instrument featuring two dials set within a frame carved to represent the mythological staff of Hermes, characterized by twin serpents and wings. Produced in the late nineteenth century, these dual instruments provided both timekeeping and meteorological measurements for domestic and commercial spaces.

These combination wall instruments were traditionally constructed from dense hardwoods such as oak or walnut, paired with spun brass bezels, glass crystal covers, and printed enamel or paper dials displaying atmospheric and time measurements.

Authentic period examples exhibit deep hand-carving in the wooden framework, natural age patina on the timber and metal surfaces, bevelled glass covers, and imperial units of pressure engraved on the barometer dial.

Position this vertical statement instrument on a narrow wall space, within a study, or above a hallway console table to anchor a gallery wall of architectural prints and complement rich timber furnishings.
