N Wilson Antiques Clocks has dated this Gilt Bronze Mantel Clock to the 19th Century.
This superb antique gilt bronze mantel clock has a fantastic figural case.
To the right of this is then a superbly detailed gilt bronze figure of cupid stood on one foot with an arrow in his right hand whilst the other hand is making a “shhh” gesture. This is all then mounted on a shaped gilt bronze base with a bow and arrow shaped mount to the front. Finally the case is finished by four lovely, turned feet.
The dial is then enamel and set out in black Roman numerals with a thin ring to the outside making the minutes. The centre of the dial is then signed by the maker “PERIGAL & DUTERRAU BOMD STREET”. The dial then has two intricately shaped hands as well as a domed and bevelled glass set into a shaped brass bezel.
The movement is then wound from the front and accessed from the back. It is ticking away as it should and comes complete with its pendulum and winding key. It is a silk suspension, single chain fusee example of the upmost quality and is extremely rare and unusual given its small size.
According to the British museum website Perigal & Duterrau are listed as watch and clock makers. The partnership of John Perigal and John Duterrau is listed at the addresses 57 New Bond Street, London (1802-1805) and 62 New Bond Street (1810 - 1840). John Dutterau was granted a Royal warrant as a Watchmaker in Ordinary to George III 20th February 1799.
