Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the 18th and 19th centuries, mahogany card tables were essential pieces of social furniture designed for drawing rooms. They catered to the popular aristocratic pastime of card games, functioning as decorative wall consoles when closed and expanding into green baize or timber gaming surfaces when opened.

These tables are traditionally constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over oak or pine carcass wood. Key features include swivel fold-over tops, concealed inner storage compartments for cards and counters, flame mahogany veneers, and hand-carved trestle or pedestal bases.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on internal compartments, historic wear around the swivel mechanism, and natural oxidisation on the underside of the wood. Period examples also feature hand-carved details, original timber patina, and traditional iron or brass hinge fittings.

When placed against a wall with the top folded down, a mahogany card table serves as a compact console table in an entryway or living room. It provides a flat surface for lamps and decorative objects while maintaining a historical architectural presence in modern spaces.

Dust the wood regularly with a dry, lint-free microfibre cloth along the grain. Preserve the original finish by applying a natural beeswax polish twice a year and keep the table away from direct sunlight, radiator heat, and moist environments to prevent veneer lifting.
