Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is a substantial wall mirror engineered to mount directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Popularised throughout the 19th century, these mirrors feature gilded wood or gesso frames crafted to reflect candlelight and natural light across high-ceilinged reception rooms.

19th-century gilt mirrors were constructed from carved softwoods such as pine or lime, coated in layers of gesso and bole clay. Thin sheets of genuine gold leaf were applied using water-gilding or oil-gilding techniques over mirrored plate glass.

Authentic pieces feature signs of aging on the rear, such as hand-sawn wooden backing boards and original iron fixing rings. The gilded surface will often display subtle wear showing the underlying reddish bole clay, along with faint foxing or dark spotting within the mirrored glass.

Position the mirror centrally above a fireplace mantel or atop a dining room sideboard to create an architectural focal point. The metallic gilded frame pairs effectively with muted modern paint palettes, contemporary art, and clean-lined furniture.

Dust the frame regularly using a dry, soft-bristled brush or feather duster. Never apply water, liquid cleaners, or household polishes to water-gilded surfaces, as moisture will dissolve the underlying gesso and destroy the gold leaf.
