Victorian overmantel mirrors are designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. They typically feature wide, flat bases, gently arched tops, and wooden frames covered in decorative gesso and gold leaf gilding.

Frames were typically constructed from pine or lime wood, shaped with applied gesso moulding, and finished with hand-applied gold leaf. Mirror plates were made using silvered glass or mercury backing depending on the precise manufacturing date.

Authentic period mirrors exhibit hand-cut wooden backing boards, natural cracking or crazing in the gesso layer beneath the gold leaf, and slight tarnishing or foxing on the glass surface.
