Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 19th-century shaped top giltwood mirror is characterised by a timber frame carved with curved or arched upper contours and finished in gold leaf. Popular throughout the Victorian period, these mirrors were designed to add architectural interest and brighten formal reception rooms or hallways.

Traditional frames were constructed from pine or lime wood, carved by hand, and coated with layers of gesso and bole clay. Microscopic sheets of gold leaf were applied over the bole and burnished using agate stones to create a smooth, reflective finish.

Authentic period pieces often show faint red or yellow bole clay showing through areas where the gold leaf has worn naturally over time. Additionally, original backing boards typically consist of hand-sawn timber panels, and original mirror glass may display mild oxidation or slight distortions.

Positioning a full-length or large giltwood mirror leaning against a modern wall creates an engaging contrast between contemporary minimalism and classical craftsmanship. Placing it opposite a window maximises natural daylight and visually doubles the sense of space in a hall or living room.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or feather duster, avoiding water or chemical cleaners that can dissolve the gesso foundation. Glass cleaner should be sprayed sparingly onto a microfibre cloth rather than directly onto the mirror to protect the frame edge.
