Nineteenth-century French mirrors of this period typically feature moulded gesso applied over a timber framework, decorated with crestings such as rocaille shells and scrollwork. Produced during the Louis Philippe and Rococo Revival periods, these pieces were designed as architectural features to reflect light within reception rooms.

These frames were constructed using a carved wood base, usually pine or oak, coated with multiple layers of gesso made from chalk and animal hide glue. Detailed ornamental motifs were moulded from gesso before paint or gilding was applied, surrounding heavy silvered or mercury glass.
