Victorian 'Japanese Style' Bamboo & Rattan Bedroom Suite with Wardrobe, Dressing Table & Washstand

A rare three piece Victorian ‘Japanese’ bamboo and rattan bedroom suite dating to circa 1890. Comprising a wardrobe, dressing table and marble topped washstand each features a rising sun design to the top, bamboo frames and rattan panels. The wardrobe has a single mirror door which opens to reveal a hanging rail and brass hooks above a base door and bamboo feet, the dressing table has a bamboo framed mirror with two red, black & gilt lacquered shelves above two drawers whilst the washstand has a black & white veined marble top with green & white tiles depicting iris above a cupboard and open shelf, each with embossed leather paper coverings to the sides.

This beautiful Eastern Oriental inspired bedroom suite is in very good condition and benefits from being much lighter than traditional furniture. There are marks and wear to the dressing table shelves and a small area of rattan below, and there are marks and wear to the dressing table marble.

Whilst bamboo and simulated bamboo furniture had been popular in earlier time periods it was during the Aesthetic period in the late 19th century that large quantities of exotic oriental inspired bamboo furniture began to be produced in Britain. With Christopher Dresser and E. W. Godwin being chief exponents of the style, Liberty & Co of London quickly helped establish the vogue for what became known as the Japanese style.
