1870 French Empire Marquetry Inlaid Suite Pair Berger Armchairs & Settee Canape

19th century
Description

Royal House Antiques is delighted to offer for sale this stunning French marquetry inlaid circa 1870 Empire style three-piece suite with neoclassical detailing.

Please note the delivery fee listed is just a guide, it covers within the M25 only for the UK and local Europe only for international, if you would like an accurate quote, please send me your postcode and I’ll provide you with the exact price.

A very rare and good-looking set, the frames are mahogany with hand carved inlay to the curved backs, the upholstery is very old and has some kind of sofa silky finish. The arms each have rather stately looking figures carved in the top, they are giltwood as are the paw feet.

In terms of condition the frames have various chips and scratches from honest age and use, the upholstery is okay, but the settee has some marks to the base, I can have it fully restored should the new owners wish to include a complete French polish of all timber and new upholstery in a fabric of your choosing, for a price please contact me.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French Empire style seating is defined by classical Roman and Greek influences, symmetrical silhouettes, dark polished woods, and decorative elements such as marquetry inlays or gilded metal mounts.

These suites were commonly constructed using fine hardwoods such as walnut or mahogany, embellished with marquetry, giltwood, or brass mounts, and upholstered in silk, satin, or velvet.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut joinery, genuine timber marquetry inlays, period-appropriate hand-gilding or cast metal mounts, and traditional webbed sprung construction beneath the upholstery.

A classic French salon suite can be integrated into modern interiors by pairing the structured, gilded frames with neutral walls, minimalist rugs, and contemporary art to balance traditional craftsmanship with modern design.

Clean the wood frame regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish annually, while protecting delicate satin upholstery from direct sunlight and humidity.
