Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian Chesterfield sofa is characterised by its equal-height arms and back, deep-buttoned or tufted upholstery, and distinctive rolled arms. During the Victorian era, these sofas frequently incorporated serpentine-curved fronts, hand-tacked brass studding, and turned timber legs fitted with brass castors.

Traditional construction relied on solid hardwood frames, typically beech or oak, stuffed with natural materials such as horsehair and coir fibre. The upholstery comprised full-grain bovine leather, hand-dyed and secured over steel coil springs with individual brass upholstery nails.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-stitched leather panels, deep hand-tufting secured with tied-off buttons, and solid hardwood frames rather than modern engineered woods. Look for original brass castors, turned wooden legs displaying historic wear, and natural patination across the leather finish.

Pair the deep leather tones with neutral wool throws, minimal metal accent tables, or contemporary artwork to balance the visual weight of the frame. Positioning the sofa against exposed brick, lime-washed walls, or inside a minimalist space creates an effective architectural focal point.

Dust the leather regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a specialist leather wax or conditioner annually to maintain flexibility. Avoid direct sunlight and positioning near active heat sources to prevent drying, cracking, or premature fading of hand-dyed finishes.
