Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Chesterfield sofa is a classic style of seating characterised by deep button tufting, rolled arms of equal height to the back, and leather upholstery. Originating in 18th-century England, the design was created to allow seating without wrinkling formal attire.

Traditional Chesterfield sofas feature solid hardwood frames, typically oak or beech, fitted with hand-tied coil springs and horsehair padding. Upholstery is crafted from full-grain leather, secured with hand-tacked brass studs along the fascia.

Authentic pieces display hand-stitched leather panels, natural patination, and individually driven metal studs rather than continuous stud strips. Inspecting the underside for traditional webbing, coil springs, and timber frame construction also aids identification.

Position the sofa as a central focal point in a neutral room scheme, paired with minimalist side tables or crisp modern textiles to balance its visual weight. Combining warm leather tones with cool concrete or monochrome accents creates textural contrast.

Keep the leather away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent drying and colour fading. Regular dusting with a soft cloth and periodic application of a specialised leather conditioner preserves flexibility and prevents cracking.
