A Rare Small Oak Dresser

18th century

An early 18th century oak dresser of small proportions. A gorgeous little piece that would fit anywhere as it is only 72" high

It has an oak potboard, 4 turned legs at the front and a pretty apron below the 3 drawers. The brass handles are old replacements. Originally it had swan neck handles

Very unusually, it has an oak panel at the sides of the base uniting the front and back legs. This is completely original.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A potboard dresser is a regional British storage piece originating in the 18th century, characterized by an open shelf near the floor intended for storing large iron pots, pans, and pottery below a row of drawers and an open plate rack.

These dressers were primarily constructed from solid English oak or fruitwoods, often joined using wooden pegs, mortise and tenon joints, and hand-cut dovetails, fitted with solid brass drop handles or escutcheons.

Authentic period pieces show evidence of hand-planed surfaces, irregular saw marks on backboards, hand-forged iron nails or wooden dowel construction, original brassware fittings, and natural patination from historic wear.

An antique dresser can be integrated into modern kitchens or dining spaces as a focal storage unit for displaying contemporary ceramics, studio pottery, or glassware against dark wood tones.

Maintain dark oak by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to protect the timber and maintain the depth of colour, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources.
