Dresser Exceptional Rare Glamorgan Welsh Oak C1770

18th century
Description

Here we have a wonderful rare Glamorganshire Oak Welsh dresser c1770. As you can see the dresser has quite remarkable colour and patina. Somehow the dresser has retained the original rack with a few small repairs. There is a row of small drawers to the top of the base with original handles and a gallery back. There are two carefully chosen planks to the top with great grain and colour. The top has shaped sides and a thumb moulded edge. There are three large drawers below with original brass swan neck handles and hand cut dove tail joints. The shaped and pierced fretwork frieze is the best we have ever seen and there are no replacements. The legs are beautifully turned and have reeded mouldings to the front of the feet. There is also a wonderful original pot board to the base. A quite stunning example in fantastic retail condition ready for your home. The dimensions are approx 211 cm high 153 cm wide 46 cm deep.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Welsh potboard dresser is a regional storage cabinet developed in Wales during the 17th and 18th centuries. It combines an upper open rack for displaying plates with a lower base featuring drawers and an open bottom shelf known as a potboard.

Georgian dressers were predominantly crafted from local hardwoods such as native oak, fruitwood, or pine. Construction techniques included hand-cut dovetail joints, wooden peg fixings, hand-planed backboards, and hand-cast brass hardware.

Authentic 18th-century pieces display signs of hand-tooling, such as adze or pit-saw marks on secondary woods like drawer linings and backboards. Original iron nails, pegged mortise-and-tenon joints, and uneven wear patterns around handles and feet also indicate age.

An antique oak dresser serves as a functional focal point in modern kitchens, dining rooms, or hallways. Open shelves allow for curated displays of contemporary ceramics, studio pottery, or glassware to create a balanced mix of traditional and modern aesthetics.

Antique oak should be cleaned using a soft, dry cloth and conditioned periodically with a high-quality beeswax paste. The furniture must be placed away from direct heat sources, radiators, and strong sunlight to prevent timber movement or splitting.
