Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An ormolu mantel clock is a decorative tabletop timepiece crafted from gilt bronze, a technique popularised in 18th and 19th-century France. These clocks feature intricate cast metalwork, classical figures, and detailed scrollwork designed to sit atop a fireplace mantel or console.

Historically, these timepieces were created using lost-wax casting for bronze, followed by hand chasing to define ornamental details. A mercury gilding process was applied to bond gold to the bronze surface, accompanied by hand-painted white enamelled dials.

Authentic pieces display sharp hand-chased details on the metalwork and natural wear to the gilded layer, particularly on raised surfaces. Examination of the movement typically reveals stamped French maker marks, serial numbers, or countwheel striking mechanisms consistent with 19th-century horology.

Position the clock as a focal piece on a central mantelpiece, marble sideboard top, or formal library shelf. Placing it against neutral or dark backdrop surfaces enhances the metallic lustre and sculptural silhouette.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfiber cloth to prevent dirt buildup in carved recesses. Avoid liquid metal polishes, abrasive cleaners, or water, as these can strip original mercury gilding and damage internal clockwork.
