Antique Melas Rug, 1.48m X 1.17m

Description

Melas rugs are among the most attractive village rugs from western Anatolia, modern Turkey. They have a very attractive pastel range of colours with simple geometric ornamentation, often with prayer designs. This piece fits the bill well. It is very nicely drawn, with a narrow field containing a prayer niche and a wide stylised floral border. The overall balance of the design is very harmonious. Woven with fine soft wool, the texture is velvety. Cherished over the generations, it has survived in good original condition with only some minor areas of old restoration. Professionally cleaned and ready for immediate use.
