French Gilt Carriage Clock

19th century
For Sale by Its About Time
Description

A fine and very original carriage clock with its original outer case covered in 'Moroccan leather' which is in good condition. The proprtions of the clock are good being larger than average. All original bevelled glass and double ended key. The original gilding has been restored and cleaned and the movement fully overhauled. Circa 1880-90. The clock has a number stamp in the lower left corner 1905. We have seen many carriage clocks over the years and this looks to be from one of the large producers, either Drocourt, Richard, or possibly Brunelot. This clock strikes the hour on a gong and also has the alarm feature with push repeat. The dial shows Arabic minutes to the outer edge of the Roman numerals. The classic carriage clock.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

First developed in France during the early nineteenth century, carriage clocks were designed as portable timepieces for travellers, featuring sturdy brass cases and balance wheel escapements to withstand movement during travel.

Traditional carriage clocks were constructed primarily with gilt brass or bronze cases, clear bevelled glass side panels, steel mechanisms, and enamel dials featuring painted numerals.

Authenticity can be verified by inspecting maker stamps on the internal movement backplate, evaluating the quality of the original gilding, and confirming the presence of heavy bevelled glass panels with a platform escapement.

A carriage clock serves as a structured decorative accent when placed on a fireplace mantelpiece, arranged within a bookshelf display, or positioned on a study desk alongside classic leather accessories.

Dust the exterior using a soft dry cloth, avoiding liquid chemicals or metal polishes that remove gilding, and arrange for periodic mechanical lubrication by a professional horologist.
