Gilt Bronze and Marble Cherub Clock Set with Visible Pendulum Antique French

19th century
Description

~ French - Circa 1880 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~

A beautiful original antique French clock set. It features charming figures of cherubs, finely modelled in gilt bronze. Two carrying the clock aloft with the pendulum swinging gently below while two cherubs follow beside, each with two candle sconces modelled as laurel branches.

The garniture sits upon white marble bases. The dial is porcelain on copper with the original beautifully cut gilt hands. The dial is signed Lieutard, Horloger du Roy, Paris.

The French movement is of high quality and is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Gilt bronze pendulum is a replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. Click the video to hear the bell and watch the clock running!

Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean with some wear in places, some adornments being a darker colour then the rest of the set. Marble is also excellent with just some nibbles to the edges. The dial is also in excellent condition, just some rubbing to the signature.

The bezel is marked for maker / retailer Charles Hour. The dial is signed in homage to the 18th century clockmaker Jean-Joseph Lieutard, Horloger du Roy, Paris (1767-1791).

Charles Hour - Diette Hour - Hour Lavigne and "JUST" clocks Charles Victor HOUR, one of the co-founders of HOUR LAVIGNE which still produces some of the finest and most spectacular clocks today (Google Hour Lavigne) He began as an apprentice at 11 years of age. Twenty years later, he bought out a failing maker and in 1891 took on an associate - Diette. Together they became one of the most important clock makers in France. Hour then associated himself with Maurice Lavigne and by the end of the XIX C, Hour Lavigne was the largest clock and timepiece manufacturer in France with over 800 employees.

Complete with pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.

A French clock garniture set is a decorative ensemble designed for a mantelpiece, consisting of a central clock flanked by a matching pair of ornaments, most commonly candelabra or vases, popularised in 18th and 19th-century France.

These clocks typically combine heavy cast gilt bronze, also known as ormolu, with natural marble bases, hand-enamelled dials, and brass mechanical movements.

Authentic pieces display finely chased bronze details, mercury gilding with natural surface patina, porcelain or enamel clock dials, and stamped movement makers marks on the back plate.

Position the central clock symmetrically on a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or sideboard, arranging the two coordinating candelabra on either side to frame the composition.

Dust the surfaces gently using a soft, dry cloth or soft-bristled brush, avoid liquid polish or abrasives that strip the original gilding, and arrange professional servicing for the mechanical movement every few years.
