Condition / Servicing Note:

Please note that antique clocks are complex and sensitive mechanical objects. While some clocks may be running at the time of listing we cannot guarantee ongoing performance without a full inspection and testing period by our specialist horologist. Where inspection, testing, or servicing is required this process can take between 2–12 weeks depending on the clock, the work needed, and current workload. This careful approach helps ensure the clock is properly assessed rather than rushed.

Clock Warranty

All clocks purchased from London City Antiques are supplied with a 12-month warranty from the date of purchase.

This warranty covers mechanical faults and failures arising from normal use. It does not extend to damage resulting from improper handling, unauthorised tampering, accidental or physical damage, environmental factors (including humidity, temperature fluctuations, or exposure to direct sunlight), or misuse.

Should a clock develop a genuine fault within the warranty period that meets the above conditions, we will, at our discretion and at no cost to you, arrange for the repair or replacement of any defective parts. All remedial work will be carried out by a fully qualified and experienced horologist.

In the unlikely event that a fault cannot be satisfactorily resolved, a full refund will be offered.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French ormolu mantel clocks gained widespread prominence during the 18th and 19th centuries, predominantly during the Reign of Louis XV, Louis XVI, and the Empire period. Crafted as status symbols for grand reception rooms, these clocks combined precise horological mechanics with high-level sculpture and gilding techniques.

These timepieces are constructed using cast bronze finished with mercurial gilding (ormolu), often contrasted with dark patinated bronze sculptural elements. The dials are typically made of white enamel featuring hand-painted floral details or numerals, housing brass mechanical clockwork movements.

Authentic pieces generally display heavy cast-bronze weight, fine chased detailing on decorative scrolls, and genuine enamel dials with pin-hole winding arbors. Original movements often carry maker marks, serial numbers, or French exhibition stamps on the back plate.

Place the clock as a central focal point on a marble fireplace mantelpiece, a dark wood sideboard, or a formal hallway console table. Pair it with minimalist modern art or mirrored backdrops to balance the elaborate metalwork.

Clean ormolu gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to remove accumulated dust from recesses, avoiding abrasive metal polishes or liquid cleaners which strip historical gilding. Mechanical movements should be serviced by a professional horologist every five to seven years.
