Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Clock garnitures originated in eighteenth-century France, gaining widespread popularity during the Louis XVI and Empire periods. They were designed as coordinated decorative sets featuring a central mantel clock flanked by two matching side pieces, such as candelabra, garniture urns, or cassolettes.

High-grade French clock garnitures typically combine carved white or black marble, alabaster, or onyx with finely cast gilt bronze mounts, known as ormolu. The internal movements feature brass plates, steel arbours, and enamel or gilded metal dials.

Authentic nineteenth-century French clocks often feature maker stamps on the back plate of the movement, such as Japy Freres or Samuel Marti. Look for hand-chased mercury gilding on the bronze mounts, fine casting detail, and count-wheel or rack-striking pendulum mechanisms.

Position the central clock symmetrically on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard, or large console table, placing the matching candelabra at equal distances on either side. This classical trio creates an architectural anchor for formal reception rooms or dining spaces.

Clean marble surfaces with a dry microfiber cloth, avoiding acidic cleaners that can etch the stone. Ormolu gilt bronze should only be dusted gently, as harsh metal polishes can strip the original gilding; horological movements require periodic professional servicing by a qualified clockmaker.
