Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Deco figural mantel clocks originated during the 1920s and 1930s, characteristically combining functional timepieces with decorative sculptural elements. These pieces often feature geometric marble or onyx bases paired with patinated or cold-painted metal sculptures depicting theatrical characters, stylized women, or animals.

Clocks from this period commonly utilised variegated marble, onyx, alabaster, and Belgian black marble for the plinths. The accompanying figures were typically cast in spelter (regule) or bronze, finished with patinas, gold leaf, or cold-painted enamels, while dials were crafted from brass, chrome, or etched glass.

Authentic period clocks feature geometric numerals, stepped plinth designs, and mechanical wind-up clockwork movements often stamped with French or European maker marks. Examining the reverse side usually reveals movement makers stamps, cast foundry marks on the metal sculptures, and heavy natural stone construction with period mounting screws.

Place the clock as a focal piece on a fireplace mantel, sideboard top, or central hallway console table. Pairing the sculptural silhouette with clean, contemporary backdrop walls or minimalist furniture allows the geometric lines and metalwork details to stand out without cluttering the space.

Dust the stone plinth and metal figures regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Avoid chemical cleaning agents on cold-painted or patinated surfaces to prevent stripping the finish, and apply a specialized neutral marble wax sparingly to protect the stone surface.
