Antique Anatolian Village Rug, 1.82m X 1.30m (6ft X 4ft 3 Inches)

19th century
Description

This rug was woven in Central Anatolia around 1850 in the ancient city of Ladik where rugs in a very similar style were woven for hundreds of years. Ladik rugs have an austere and noble attraction. This example typically has a row of tulips, but has an unusual field of highly graphic geometric ornaments. The overall composition is very appealing, including a stylised floral border. The condition is as one would expect for a rug of such great age, with several old repairs, but retains its charm and character, and is still in very usable condition. Recently professionally cleaned.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Anatolian village rugs are hand-woven or hand-knotted floor coverings produced by nomadic, semi-nomadic, or settled weavers across Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey). They are defined by localized geometric patterns, tribal symbols, and regional dye palettes.

Traditional Anatolian rugs are constructed primarily using hand-spun sheep wool for both the pile and the warp and weft foundation. Natural vegetable and mineral dyes were historically utilized to colour the yarn before knotting.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-knotted construction with slight irregularities in the weave and pattern, hand-bound selvedges, and natural abrash colour variations in the pile. The underside shows a visible, precise mirror image of the top design.

Anatolian rugs act as a grounding element, anchoring living rooms, hallways, or dining areas. Their rich geometric motifs and classic colourways provide textural contrast alongside minimalist modern furniture or warm wood antiques.

Regular gentle vacuuming without a rotating brush bar removes surface dust. Spills should be blotted immediately with a clean dry cloth, and professional hand-washing by a specialist rug restorer is recommended for deep cleaning.
