Description

Pair of extraordinary sculptural Arts and Crafts chairs in the Gothic or Medieval style, together with a matching table, made from burred and gnarled elm and retaining the waney edges of the tree.

The seat and sides of the chairs are formed of slabs and supported with a metal bar and brackets, and united by a back supporting bar. The table has a rectangular top supported on slab ends with metal braces and is united by a stretcher.

According to the last owners, these pieces were made from an ancient tree which came down in a storm at Hean Castle, Saundersfoot, in Pembrokeshire in the early the twentieth century.

(The table bears the metal label of Wanderworld, who specialised in furniture in this style, although not usually as elaborate or made from such interesting timber.)
