Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

T Thomason & Co was a prominent 19th and early 20th-century metalworking firm based in Birmingham, England, specializing in ecclesiastical items and fine domestic metalware. Their production during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods frequently drew upon Gothic Revival and historicist metalworking traditions.

During this period, brass candlesticks were typically produced by casting sections in sand moulds and finishing them on a turning lathe. The individual elements, such as the socket, column, drip pan, and base, were subsequently assembled using internal threaded iron or brass rods.

Authentic late Victorian brass pieces display subtle casting marks, hand-turned thread patterns inside the base, and genuine surface patination in low-wear crevices. Foundry marks or manufacturer stamps, such as those from Birmingham makers, are often located on the underside of the base.

Substantial brass candlesticks provide geometric structure and metallic warmth when positioned on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard, or dining table. Placing polished brass against dark painted backdrops or natural timber surfaces creates a textured visual contrast.

To remove wax build-up, submerge the non-ferrous sections briefly in hot water to soften the wax before wiping with a soft cloth. Routine maintenance requires gently dusting with a microfibre cloth and applying a microcrystalline wax to prevent rapid oxidisation.
