Description

A very fine Pair of Early 19th Century Antique English Georgian Brass Candlesticks by J.T. & Co , the one marked on the underside of its base, both retaining their internal wire push-ejectors and brass buttons. cf. Roderick Butler ~ "A Study Collection of Marked Domestic Brass and other Base Metalware c.1600-c.1900", published in 2001. The J.T.& Co. mark is there discussed on page 88, where Butler states that although not certain, it seems probable that the mark is that of John Turner & Co of Birmingham. listed in the Birmingham 'Wrightson' directories of 1818 and 1823. Very few antique brass candlesticks bear Maker's marks, thus making this pair of documentary interest.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian brass candlesticks, produced during the 18th and early 19th centuries, feature classical proportions, turned knopped stems, and heavy cast bases. They were crafted primarily to hold wax candles on dining tables, desks, and mantelpieces.

Most period brass candlesticks were cast in separate sections using sand moulds, then joined together and finished on a turning lathe. The hollow interiors typically retain tool marks, seam lines, or core residues from the casting process.

Authentic examples often display subtle hand-finishing asymmetries, seam marks along the stem, and age-related wear on the underside of the base. They are significantly heavier than later hollow-stamped brass reproductions.

Display brass candlesticks as a pair or in asymmetrical groupings along a mantelpiece or dining table centre. Pairing polished or patinated warm metal with neutral contemporary tones adds historic contrast and texture to a room.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft cloth and avoid harsh chemical polishes that strip protective patination. Residual wax can be softened using a warm hair dryer and gently removed without scratching the metal surface.
