Pair of Antique English Georgian "Harrison Patent" Telescopic Brass Candlesticks

19th century
Description

An attractive Pair of Early 19th Century Antique English Georgian Telescopic Brass Candlesticks of documentary interest, the one being stamped HARRISON PATENT. William Harrison and Son, Brassfounders, are listed in The New Triennial Directory for Birmingham of 1818 as being in business in Park Street of that city. Very few antique candlesticks bear a Maker's Mark, the late Ronald Michaelis, in his authoritative work, " Old Domestic Base Metal Candlesticks", suggesting perhaps only one in a thousand. This lovely old pair, each of which retains it's internal push-ejector rod and button, simply ooze period charm, glowing with that deep patina only to be achieved by decades of hand polishing and thus remain perfectly practical for everyday use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Telescopic brass candlesticks feature an adjustable stem mechanism, popularised in the Georgian and Regency eras, allowing the height of the light source to be raised or lowered to suit functional requirements.

Georgian brass candlesticks were typically cast in copper alloy sections, turned on a lathe, and assembled with internal friction-fit telescopic inserts or push-up mechanisms.

Authentic examples often feature stamped maker marks or patent inscriptions around the outer rim of the circular base, accompanied by heavy cast brass construction and turned banding.

Displaying a pair on a dining table centre, mantelpiece, or minimalist sideboard introduces warm metallic tones and historical texture to contemporary or transitional schemes.

To maintain the surface finish without removing historical patina, dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and polish sparingly with a non-abrasive metal cleaner or microcrystalline wax.
