The barley twist pattern, also known as Solomonic column design, became widespread in Europe during the seventeenth century. Originally inspired by classical architecture, the spiral form was adapted into woodwork and metal casting for decorative items including candlesticks and furniture legs.

Historic brass candlesticks were typically cast in pieces using sand moulds, then turned on a lathe and joined. Open twist stems were created using specialised casting techniques or hand-chasing to hollow out the central spiral core.

Authentic pieces usually display signs of hand-finishing, subtle asymmetries, and wear on the underside of the base. Look for threaded screw joints inside the stem, seam marks from two-part castings, and natural oxidisation in the recessed details.
