Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Barley twist turning, inspired by Solomonic columns, became popular in England during the late 17th century and experienced a significant revival during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods around 1900. Woodturners used specialized lathes to craft the helical spiral stems commonly seen on candle stands and furniture legs.

Turned wooden candlesticks from this era were primarily crafted from dense hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or mahogany. The top candle sockets, or nozzles, were frequently fitted with brass inserts to collect wax drip and protect the timber from heat.

Authentic pieces around 1900 feature genuine hand-assisted lathe turnings showing slight variations between pairs, natural age-related patination on the oak, and fitted brass candle sockets. Look for circular dished bases designed to catch wax splatters and stable joinery where the stem connects to the base.

Wooden candlesticks bring organic texture and historical contrast into contemporary settings. They can be placed as a symmetric pair on a dining table or fireplace mantelpiece, or grouped alongside ceramic vases and modern artwork on a sideboard.

Dust the wood regularly with a soft cloth and apply clear beeswax polish occasionally to nourish the timber and preserve its finish. Clean wax residue from brass nozzles using warm water and avoid harsh chemical abrasives that could strip the original surface patina.
