Description
Here is a good quality antique French provincial chestnut hall settle, measuring 5ft 3?” wide, circa 1870, in excellent original condition, which originated from the provinces of Brittany in northern France.
Straight arms with rounded ends and supported by block supports, connect the back to the single plank seat. The bench is raised on block legs to the front and rear. The seat is solid and comfortable to sit on. The frame is constructed using the traditional wooden peg method.
Condition Report:
This bench is in excellent original condition, which is commensurate with its age. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The back, arms and legs of the settle are firm. As the settle boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and the years of care and cleaning they have received. This item is solid in joint and ready to use.
