Antique Twisted Three Handled Glass & Silver Plate Biscuit Box C.1890

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Puckerings
Description

A really unusual biscuit box (it would make the most wonderful ice bucket too); made from glass and silver plate which is marked EPNS and 1/0 which I believe is made from the famous German maker, WMF (WÜRTTEMBERGISCHE METALLWARENFABRIK), and would date to c.1890/1900.

The glass body has a diagonal "wave" to it, with all other elements following suit with three wonderful applied twisted handles without damage and the handle to the lid also has the twisted design.

A fabulous and highly desirable piece, perfect for both the period or contemporary home. Excellent condition; the body has a diameter measuring 5" and 7" handle to handle and stands 6 3/4" tall to top of lid handle.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Introduced in the nineteenth century, biscuit barrels were decorative dining table accessories designed to keep biscuits fresh during tea service while serving as a centrepiece for hostesses.

Victorian biscuit boxes commonly featured blown or moulded glass vessels paired with silver-plated or sterling silver lids, collars, and handles to prevent tarnishing and maintain structural integrity.

Authentic pieces from this era often display makers marks or electroplate hallmarks on the underside of the lid or collar, along with period-appropriate wear to the silver plating and hand-finished glass elements.

These versatile containers can be placed on a kitchen island or sideboard top to store confectionery or decorative items, adding a reflective period accent to modern spaces.

Clean the glass body using mild soap and warm water, avoiding submersion of metal components, while gently polishing the silver-plated rim with a soft cloth and specialized silver polish.
