Description

Gilt Bronze Mantle Clock by P.H. Mourey 'Putto with Dog' c.1860

This is a very nice gilt bronze mantle clock by Phillipe H. Mourey (French 1840-1910)

The clock depicts a winged putto with a bow and arrow with to the right of him a dog on a lead, the dog has a bow

around it's neck and jumps up to the putto.

Next to the putto lays a quiver with arrows.

The gilt base what stands on large bun feet is decorated with strings of flowers.

The white enameled dial has roman numerals and blued hands, a small nips next to the winding holes.

The eight day movement is by Jappe Freres.

A signature of P.H. Mourey is found at the back of the clock with the numbers 2 and 64, this is most probably the date of manufacture, February 1864.

The eight day movement strikes on the half and full hour on a silvered bell.

The clock has been restored a few years ago to is former glory.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Produced during the mid-to-late 19th century under Napoleon III, these clocks feature elaborate figural subjects, classical or rococo revival themes, and detailed casting in gilt bronze or spelter with gilded finishes.

These timepieces were built using cast bronze or metal alloys coated in mercury gilding or electroplated gold, housing mechanical spring-driven movements with porcelain or enamel dials and brass pendulum assemblies.

Authentic period pieces display stamped makers marks or foundry signatures on the rear movement plates, fine chasing details on the cast metalwork, and hand-painted enamel dial plates with traditional Roman numerals.

Place the clock as a central focal point on a marble mantelpiece, console table, or dark wood sideboard, balanced by minimalist artwork or modern stone vessels to juxtapose ornate metalwork against clean architectural lines.

Remove surface dust using a soft dry camel-hair brush, avoiding abrasive chemicals, metal cleaners, or water, which can strip protective lacquers and damage original gilt finishes.
