Antique Tekke main carpet, Turkmenistan, second half 19th century. A decent example, tightly knotted with velvety wool and all natural dyes. The piece is in pretty good shape, good pile all-over, one or two small low areas, small patches to its fat kilim ends, side cords replaced. Clean and floor ready.

Tekke main carpets originated among the Tekke tribe, one of the primary Turkmen nomadic groups of Central Asia. Traditionally woven by women on horizontal looms, these large textiles served as essential floor coverings inside yurts and represented major family heirlooms and status symbols.

These carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a wool warp and weft foundation. Symmetrical or asymmetrical knots are employed alongside natural vegetable dyes, resulting in deep madder reds, dark blues, ivory, and walnut shades.

Authentic Tekke carpets are identified by their distinctive octagonal gol motifs arranged in vertical rows, separated by secondary cross-shaped motifs. They typically feature fine knotting, subtle colour variations from natural dyes, and woven flatweave (elem) panels at both ends.
