Antique Ersari Turkmen Main Carpet, Northern Afghanistan, Circa 1890.

19th century
Description

Size: 9ft 6in x 7ft 10in (290 x 240cm).

Antique Ersari Turkmen main carpet from Northern Afghanistan.

Circa 1890.

The carpet has 3 rows of 6 large Ersari Suleyman type guls with interesting linked star minor guls and other filler elements in the field. The main guls are of a good large size and octagonal in shape. The random filler elements in the field point to tribal origin. The carpet has an Ersari 'star' border. The carpet has a warm red field colour with the guls drawn in blues and brighter shades of red. Note the row of small flowers / shrubs at the top end before the kilim.

The carpet is in good condition with even wear and medium pile. The top end retains the original kilim end finish, the lower end is slightly reduced and has been over-bound in cotton at some point in the carpets history.

The carpet is suitable for normal domestic use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Ersari Turkmen carpets are hand-knotted textiles woven by the Ersari tribe, predominantly in Northern Afghanistan and the Middle Amu Darya region. Characterised by their deep red ground and repeating octagonal gul motifs, these main carpets were historically crafted for tribal use during the nineteenth century.

Turkmen carpets are woven almost exclusively from hand-spun sheeps wool, which forms both the pile and the warp and weft foundation. Natural vegetable and plant dyes are traditionally employed to achieve the characteristic deep red, indigo, and terracotta shades.

Authentic nineteenth-century Ersari carpets feature soft, hand-spun wool pile, asymmetric hand-tied knots, and a flexible handle. They display signature octagonal gul medallions arranged in structured rows on a terracotta red ground, framed by geometric borders.

A red Turkmen carpet serves as a grounding anchor in both classic and contemporary interiors. It pairs effectively with dark wood furniture in traditional settings or provides warm visual texture against neutral palettes and clean-lined modern furnishings.

Vacuum gently without a rotary beater bar to protect the hand-spun wool fibres from damage. Professional specialist cleaning is recommended for stain removal, and placing a quality rug underlay beneath prevents uneven wear.
