We are pleased to offer this Barharlu Carpet South West Persia circa 1890 in excellent original condition and even pile.These Carpets are quite scarce and this is a nicely drawn example with soft Blue and Green dyes.

The vibrant colours are still evident showing the Central Floral design and detailed border.A nice touch is the original end finishes.

We are based in Buckingham and The Carpet can be viewed by appointment only or a Home visit can be arranged.

Baharlu carpets were woven by nomadic and semi-nomadic members of the Baharlu sub-tribe, part of the Khamseh Confederation in South-West Persia (modern-day Iran). Produced predominantly during the nineteenth century, these rugs are noted for their high knot density, dark rich colour palettes, and stylized geometric zoomorphic patterns.

Traditional Persian tribal carpets were hand-knotted on portable looms using hand-spun sheeps wool for both the pile and the warp and weft foundation. The wool was coloured using natural vegetable and mineral dyes, including madder for reds, indigo for blues, and walnut husks or pomegranate peels for browns and yellows.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature asymmetrical hand-knotted construction, subtle dye variations known as abrash, and a soft, flexible handle. Visual indicators include multi-medallion central fields, repeated serrated leaf borders, and small geometric animal or plant motifs scattered throughout the field.

Designers frequently use antique tribal carpets to add texture, history, and warmth to contemporary or minimalist rooms. They function effectively as a focal point in a seating area, beneath a modern glass or timber dining table, or layered over neutral jute floor coverings.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting without a rotating beater bar to avoid pulling the wool fibres.
