Antique English Edwardian Three Piece Mahogany & Cane Bergere Suite (Circa 1910)

1900 - 1920
Description

This is a stunning quality antique English Edwardian three-piece mahogany bergere cane suite, circa 1910, in excellent condition, which has been newly upholstered, including new English feather cushions.

Having a moulded frame, with a cloud shape arched back, decorated with floral cartouches, the suite comprises of a two-seat couch with two armchairs. The suite is constructed of top quality solid mahogany; with elegant shaped arms, incorporating finely carved acanthus leaves to the arms, with moulded detail to the vertical supports and a finely carved frieze, which are raised on ball and claw feet. The suite features the original twin panel cane-work to the sides of the arms and single panel cane work to the back (bergere suites that feature twin panel cane walls are of better quality than single cane suites). Importantly, the cane work is in excellent original condition. There are no holes in the cane work (it is rare to see a bergere suite where the cane work is in excellent condition). The suite is of good seat height; it does not sit too low, like other bergere suites you see in the market place.

The suite has been newly upholstered in top quality hardwearing fine needle structured oatmeal dralon fabric; finished with matching piping and braiding to the chair frames. The suite also boasts top quality new English handmade feather cushions (to the seats and back), which makes this suite exceptionally comfortable to sit on. The cushion covers feature zips so that the top layers can be removed if they need to be cleaned. The suite features a firm sprung base below, which makes the suite extremely comfortable. The suite seats up to four people comfortably.

Two Seat Couch Dimensions:

External Height = 81.4cm or 32 or 2ft 8”

External Width = 152.5cm or 60” or 5ft

External Depth = 81cm or 31?” or 2ft 7?”

Armchair Dimensions:

External Height = 82cm or 32¼” or 2ft 8¼”

External Width = 75cm or 29½” or 2ft 5½”

External Depth = 83cm or 32?” or 2ft 8?”

Condition Report:

This suite is in excellent condition. The suite boasts its original polish, which has been cleaned and revived in our workshops. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges of the frame but nothing significant considering its age. The suite retains its original cane work, which is in excellent original condition, with no damage or holes. It is rare to see Bergere suites, which have their cane work in perfect condition, with no damage. The frame is also solid with no breaks to the arms or back of the suite. Therefore, the upholstery and feather cushions are in excellent new condition, with no signs of fading, wear and tear, or marks. The upholstery is therefore clean. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and the years of care and cleaning they have received. This suite is well constructed, solid in joint and ready to use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
