Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A roll top desk, also known as a tambour desk, features a flexible slatted wooden shutter that slides down to conceal the writing surface and interior compartments. Popularised in the late nineteenth century, these desks offered privacy and organisation in Victorian offices and domestic studies.

These desks were typically crafted using solid mahogany and rich mahogany veneers over secondary timber like pine or oak. The flexible tambour front consists of thin wooden slats glued onto a durable canvas backing, gliding smoothly within side grooves.

Look for hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer lining, original cast brass handles or backplates, and signs of authentic wear within the wooden side channels of the tambour shutter. Authentic pieces from around 1880 frequently feature stamped locks and panelled pedestal doors.

Position the desk in a dedicated study or living room alcove, paired with a contemporary task lamp to create contrast against the dark timber finish. Balance the warm mahogany tones with pale, neutral wall paint and minimalist seating.

Dust the wood regularly using a dry, soft cloth, and apply a beeswax polish once or twice a year following the grain. Avoid silicone sprays and keep the desk away from direct heat sources or excessive humidity to prevent the tambour backing from warping.
