Description

A very attractive and small, mahogany roll top desk from the 1920's, as per the silver presentation label that reads 'Presented to "William Hughes ESQ" By his friends and well wishers in Llandudno on his retirement from the bank July 1927' and complete with presentation book and history. Sat on ogee bracket feet and with a double file drawer to the bottom right and blind fretwork to the upper three drawers and frieze to the top. Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chippendale style writing desks typically feature rich hardwoods such as mahogany, classical proportions, carved fretwork or acanthus motifs, and solid pedestal construction with brass hardware.

Roll top desks are traditionally constructed from solid hardwoods like mahogany or oak, featuring flexible wooden slatted tambours and leather or gilt-tooled baize writing surfaces.

Authentic early 20th-century pieces display machine-assisted joinery alongside hand finishing, dovetailed drawer joints, period-correct brass fittings, and natural patination on the timber and writing surface.

A dark mahogany desk acts as a focal point in a study or home library, pairing well with neutral wall palettes, brass task lighting, and traditional wool rugs to ground the space.

Maintain the timber by dusting with a soft cloth and applying beeswax regularly, while treating the leather insert with specialist leather balm to prevent drying and cracking.
