Antique Georgian Mahogany Tambour Top Cylinder Desk with Pull-out Writing Slides

19th century
Description

A superb antique Georgian mahogany cylinder desk of elegant proportions, standing on finely tapered square legs terminating in the original brass cup castors. The beautifully figured mahogany tambour front slides smoothly upwards to reveal a wonderfully fitted interior comprising pigeonholes, drawers and compartments above a generous leather-lined writing surface.

A particularly desirable feature of this desk is the pair of original pull-out writing slides concealed beneath the tambour section. These provide additional workspace when required and were traditionally used to support correspondence, ledgers, writing accessories or candles whilst working. Such features significantly enhance both the practicality and desirability of the piece.

The well-organised interior was designed to keep important documents and correspondence neatly arranged whilst allowing the desk to be quickly closed and secured behind the tambour front. Below are two full-width drawers retaining their original brass swan neck handles and escutcheons, offering useful additional storage.

Cylinder desks became highly fashionable during the Georgian period, providing a sophisticated and secure writing station for the gentleman's study, library or drawing room. Today they remain one of the most elegant and practical forms of antique writing furniture.

With its rich colour, excellent patination and attractive proportions, this is a fine example that would make a striking addition to any home office, library or reception room.

Condition Report

Very good antique condition with age-related wear, marks and patination consistent with age and use. The tambour operates smoothly, the pull-out writing slides function as intended and the interior retains its original fitted arrangement. A handsome and practical desk ready for everyday use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A tambour top cylinder desk features a flexible slatted wooden shutter that rolls along a curved interior track to enclose the upper writing surface and storage compartments when not in use.

Georgian desks were predominantly crafted from solid and veneered mahogany, featuring drawer linings made from oak or pine, and fitted with cast brass handles and escutcheons.

Authentic Georgian writing desks typically display hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-planed back panels, original brass hardware with natural surface patination, and proportional slender legs.

Position the bureau against a neutral painted wall in a dedicated study or alcove, pairing it with modern task illumination and minimalist decorative objects to complement the warm wood tones.

Clean the slatted tambour front with a soft dry brush to remove dust, apply natural beeswax along the runner tracks for smooth operation, and keep the piece in a stable environment away from direct heat sources to prevent timber movement.
