Description:
This is a splendid quality Welsh George III oak high-back box settle, circa 1780, in good original condition. The settle is constructed of solid oak panelled timbers and features a high back with a good angled “rake”. The back consists of seven inset-moulded panels, comprising 3 horizontal panels featuring a central carved sunflower panel, flanked by two larger panels featuring guilloche carvings. The large vertical panels incorporate lozenge carvings. The fame is carved with formal strap work arabesque and further guilloche rails, enriched with punch work and defined by a sunken matted ground. The back is secured by down swept arms connected to ring turned baluster supports. The hinged lid opens to reveal a large storage space; ideal for packing shoes, boots and wellies away. The box section comprises four inset oak panels to the front, interspersed with decorative ring turned split spindles, and inset panel to the sides. The back of the settle boasts its original chamfered frame and boards; all of which are in very good condition. Built in the traditional manner, with a peg construction method, the settle is a solid piece of furniture.

As this item boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic rich oxblood red and brown colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and the years of care and cleaning they have received.

Condition Report:
The item is in good original condition, which is commensurate with its age. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The back incorporates later Victorian carvings, specifically the lozenge (diamond shape) carvings to the large vertical panels. The back and arms of the settle are firm. The settle possesses the original length styles and floorboards. As the settle boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and the years of care and cleaning they have received. This item is very heavy, solid in joint and ready to use.
