Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An antique silver inkstand is a desk accessory designed to hold inkwells, dip pens, and wax seals. Originating in the 17th century and gaining widespread popularity through the 18th and 19th centuries, these stands range from simple trays to elaborate multi-piece writing sets.

Inkstands generally feature a base made from sterling silver, Sheffield plate, or silver plate, combined with ink reservoirs constructed from cut glass, crystal, or porcelain. Internal fittings may also include brass or silver-plated lids to prevent evaporation.

Authentic pieces display hallmarks or makers marks indicating silver purity, city of manufacture, and maker, or specific electroplate trademarks such as EPNS. Construction details like hand-cut glass facets and hand-soldered feet also signal period craftsmanship.

A silver inkstand functions as a functional decorative object on a home office desk, console table, or bookshelf. Pairing silver metalwork with dark timber surfaces or leather blotters highlights the contrast and texture of the metal.

Dust regularly with a soft cotton cloth and clean silver areas using specialized silver polish to manage tarnish and oxidisation. Glass reservoirs should be removed before cleaning with lukewarm water and mild soap to avoid damaging metal joins.
