Antique Victorian Solid Silver Novelty Pen Wipe

19th century
Description

A solid sterling silver novelty pen wipe, modelled as a shoe shine/wipe.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian silver pen wipe was a functional desk accessory designed to absorb excess ink and remove debris from steel or quill pen nibs to prevent corrosion and maintain clear writing.

These desk objects were commonly crafted using a hallmarked sterling silver frame fitted with dense, stiff natural bristles, such as horsehair, or stacked cloth discs held securely within the base.

Authentic pieces feature official British hallmarks denoting silver purity, the assay office, date letter, and makers mark, along with signs of period hand-finishing and natural aging to the bristles.

An antique silver pen wipe functions as a refined decorative object when styled on an office desk, curated bookshelf, or console table alongside vintage leather-bound books and brass desk accoutrements.

Polishing should be limited to the silver exterior using a soft cotton cloth and dedicated silver cleaner, taking care to keep chemical solutions away from the natural bristles.
