This is a very good quality antique Arts & Crafts Victorian English oak bench, circa 1890, in excellent original condition. The bench features an arched back rail above three larger shaped vertical splats, flanked by smaller straight vertical splats. The detachable seats are upholstered in a brown padded leather style material. The two seats are independent of each other. The bench features shaped arms above a straight front rail and ring turned front legs. The back legs are shaped.
This style of couch is typical of the Arts & Crafts movement in the late Victorian period and early 20th Century, where traditional craftsmanship using simple forms, often using medieval, romantic or folk styles of decoration. This movement advocated economic and social reform and has been said to be essentially anti-industrial.
This item features a rich golden oak colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.

Condition Report:
This bench is in excellent original condition and this is what gives it its lovely patination and colour. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The detachable seats are upholstered in a brown padded leather style material. Importantly, there are no breaks or damage to the legs. The item is solid in joint and stands firm on the ground (it does not wobble).
