Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Longcase clocks gained widespread prominence in the 18th century during the Georgian era, reflecting advancements in British horology and cabinetmaking. Makers across regional centres produced weight-driven mechanical movements housed in high-grade timbers such as mahogany and oak.

The exterior cases were predominantly crafted from solid or veneered mahogany, oak, or walnut, while the clock mechanisms featured brass movements, cast brass corner spandrels, silvered chapter rings, and iron weights.

Authentic period examples generally display engraved brass dials with applied corner spandrels, maker signatures from historic clockmaking towns, separate seconds dials, and hand-cast mechanical components rather than stamped modern parts.

A tall floor clock creates a focal point in hallways, entryways, or formal living rooms, offering architectural height and visual balance when paired with contemporary artwork or minimalist furnishings.

Keep the wooden case away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage, polish the cabinet with natural beeswax, and have the mechanical movement cleaned and lubricated by a professional horologist every five to seven years.
