Rare Antique English Novelty Cruet Set - Violin / Musical - 1894

19th century
For Sale by Puckerings
Description

This is a piece I have never seen before, and I doubt very much will come across again.

This Victorian novelty cruet set is made from silver plate with a makers mark on the underside for William Padley (Formerly Padley, Parkin & Staniforth) of Sheffield. This piece is also lucky enough to have an English design registration number, 228149, for the year 1894.

The violin has an open salt (gilded to protect the silver), a pepper pot and mustard pot. The glass jars carry on the musical theme, one engraved with the Wedding March and the other with Auld Lang Syne, both the lids are engraved with crossed violin bows .... all quite outstanding and unusual. The two spoons, one for the salt and one for the mustard have terminals featuring the Bass Cleff and Treble Clef.

A remarkable piece, in excellent condition measuring 9 1/2" x 3 1/2".

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian novelty cruet set is a tabletop dining accessory designed during the late nineteenth century in whimsical or figurative shapes, such as musical instruments, vehicles, or animals, to hold salt, pepper, mustard, and other condiments.

These sets were primarily constructed from sterling silver or silver-plated base metals, frequently featuring cut or moulded glass liners, gilt-lined salt wells, and small silver condiment spoons.

Authentic pieces typically bear British silver hallmarks or electroplate maker marks, design registration numbers (Rd numbers), and period-specific construction details such as hand-engraved embellishments.

An antique silver cruet set can be styled as a decorative accent on a dining room sideboard, integrated into a bar cart display, or placed on an open kitchen shelf alongside historical glassware.

Clean silver components using a soft cloth and specialist silver polish, avoiding harsh abrasive chemicals. Glass containers should be washed separately by hand in warm water and dried thoroughly before reassembly.
