A Fine Victorian Oak Pedestal Desk by James Lamb, Manchester

19th century
Description

A very fine oak desk by James Lamb of Manchester.

Nine mahogany lined drawers with 6 small drawers and two cupboard doors to the top. Signed Lamb Manchester on centre drawer.

This desk is in superb original condition, having no restoration except repolishing and a new leather. The desk was apparently made for the Headmaster of a private school. The small drawers still bear the handwritten 19th century labels stating: "Correspondence with Parents", "Correspondence with Teachers, Terms and Conditions", Correspondence with Trade", "Health certificates", etc. This is a wonderful desk and a piece of social history.

The cabinet maker James Lamb was established in Manchester in 1843 and his firm quickly gained a reputation for the high quality workmanship and materials employed. Lamb profited from a wealthy clientele in Manchester and other prosperous towns in the North of England. His furniture was praised at several international exhibitions, including Paris 1867 and again in 1878 when a Gold Medal was received.

Dimensions: 56.1/4" x 32.1/2" x H 42.1/2" Working H 30.1/4"

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian pedestal desk consists of a flat writing surface resting on two vertical banks of drawers, known as pedestals, surrounding a central kneehole space. Commonly featuring leather writing surfaces and turned timber handles, these desks were designed for professional and domestic study spaces in the nineteenth century.

Victorian desks were primarily constructed from solid timbers such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, frequently incorporating oak-lined drawer interiors and hand-cut dovetail joinery. Inset writing surfaces were typically made from gilded and blind-tooled leather.

Authentic period pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass or turned wood drawer pulls, and stamped maker details on drawer edges or lock mechanisms. Natural timber oxidisation, subtle wear near the kneehole, and original patina on hardware further indicate authenticity.

Positioning a Victorian oak pedestal desk as the primary workspace in a dedicated study or home office creates a focused interior layout. Combining the warm oak grain with modern brass task lamps and neutral wall shades balances traditional cabinetmaking with modern aesthetic preferences.

Dust timber surfaces regularly using a soft lint-free cloth and apply high-quality beeswax once or twice annually along the wood grain. Preserve the leather writing inset by applying specialized leather conditioner to prevent drying, keeping the desk away from direct heat sources.
