Late Victorian Oak Roll Top Desk

19th century
Description

A good quality late Victorian oak roll top desk. It has been in our workshop for a good tidy up, where most importantly the tambour has been re-backed (not an easy or inexpensive job). The desk has been well used and a letter of interest from the previous owner comes with it. The worst of the superficial damage is a chipped drawer (three down on the left) but most people would not notice it and overall the condition is solid and very good. The finish was totally rejuvenated whilst in the workshop and two of the knobs replaced on the interior drawers. This desk has fielded panels (bevelled) to the exterior always a sign of superior quality and expense when originally made. The sympathetic restoration gives this dark oak desk a really good, lived in but everything works exactly as it should. Tambour and central drawer locks working with keys, whilst the side drawers lock automatically when the tambour is closed.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the late nineteenth century, roll-top desks feature a flexible wooden tambour shutter that slides downward along curved side channels to cover internal storage compartments and writing surfaces.

These desks were typically constructed from oak, walnut, or mahogany, using slatted wooden tambour shutters backed with canvas, dovetail jointed drawers, and field panelled side structures.

Authentic examples display hand-cut or early machine dovetails, carved wood or cast metal handles, internal pigeonhole arrangements, and integrated shutter locking mechanisms.

Position the piece as a central focal point within a home office or library, balancing its substantial silhouette with modern leather seating and streamlined lighting fixtures.

Apply beeswax to the tambour runner tracks to facilitate smooth operation, dust surfaces regularly with a soft cloth, and maintain stable ambient humidity to prevent timber movement.
