This is a good quality antique Tudor style solid oak carved monks’ bench which has been constructed in the later Victorian period, circa 1900. The monks’ bench features a peg hinge tabletop, which is carved on the inside with a central diamond lozenge. The tabletop can be adjusted to act as a backrest or a tabletop. Below, the back is attached to the base with solid turned arms. The seat is hinged and reveals a useful large storage area below for shoes or boots. The front central frame below the seat features carved lunettes, which again, is typical of the Tudor. To the front and sides of the base there are pretty inset oak panels flanked by a reeded frame. The bench stands on four turned oak legs which are connected by a central stretcher for added strength. The bench is built using peg construction.

This item features a dark oak colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.

Dimensions:

External height (top raised) = 95.8cm or 37 ¾” or 3ft 1 ¾”

External height (top lowered) = 73.2cm or 28¾” or 2ft 4¾”

Arm height = 70.9cm or 27?” or 2ft 3?”

Condition Report:

The item is in excellent condition and is commensurate with its age. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The hinges to the seat are in excellent working order. The arms and back supports are solid in joint and do not wobble. This item features the original polish and patination, which is why it boasts such a stunning dark oak colour. Free of woodworm, solid in joint and ready to use.
