Collinge Antiques has dated this piece to the Before 1700 period.
For the storage of ground flour or oats, the cleverly hinged lid lifts off the base to make a hand barrow to be carried by two people with long poles which would engage with the shaped yokes. Of pegged construction, the timber is oak, untouched by wax or polish since the day it was made, it has been bleached almost white over the years.
