This is a superb quality antique Victorian solid oak carved monks’ bench, circa 1880. The monks’ bench features a peg hinge tabletop, which is carved on both sides. The tabletop can be adjusted to act as a backrest or a tabletop. Below, the back is attached to the base with solid reeded arms. The front of the arms are carved with acanthus leaves. The seat is hinged and reveals a useful large storage area below for shoes or boots.
Surrounding this are floral carvings. To the front and sides of the base there are pretty inset carved oak panels. The bench is built using peg construction.
This item features the original polish and patination; which is why it boasts such a stunning deep rich golden oak colour.
Condition Report:
The item is in excellent condition and is commensurate with its age. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The hinges to the seat are in excellent working order. The arms and back supports are solid in joint and do not wobble. This item features the original polish and patination; which is why it boasts such a stunning deep rich golden oak colour. Free of woodworm, solid in joint and ready to use.
